The following message and photos are from Brian Huggett.
Brian made an attempt to service a stream gage this past weekend (19/20 March 2005) on Illilouette Creek in Yosemite National Park.
"As you may or may not have guessed, the weather was a limiting factor on getting into the Illilouette last weekend. I encountered rain all day on Saturday and made it to the snow line at about 6500' soaking wet. And that's when the wind picked up - visibility to about 200'. Check out the precip gage for the valley. I checked the Ostrander wind gage for Saturday and saw that the high gust was somewhere around 25 mph. I was heading up at about that time. Anyway, got to within the last quarter mile of the top, figuring now that I needed to get to the top to hide out in the hut and dry off and stay warm. Stopped by a lil' avalanche chute that doubles as the express elevator to Curry Village. See first photo. Immediately turned around and started looking for my tracks that were fast disappearing. Loose snow all around. Heard many rockslides that trip. Got back marginally worse off than when I left and I am glad I came down because it rained all that night and most of Sunday. Snow down to the valley floor. Maybe an inch of slushy warm snow.First couple of photos are of the trail and where I turned around. Last photo is off Glacier Point Monday morning before I left."
