March 1998

By March of 1998, the region of unusually warm water associated with El Niño has started to shrink. Look at how the region of water with temperature greater than 4 C is now only about 75 meters deep along the coast of South America; in January, it was 150 meters deep, and the maximum temperature anomaly was over 11 C. Now the maximum temperatures are only 5 C warmer than usual.
