February 1997

By February of 1997, the warm anomalies had spread all the way across the Pacific to the coast of Peru ("C" in the picture). There still wasn't much happening on the surface, but water beneath the surface was warmer than usual, at depths between 75 and 175 meters, almost all the way from South America to New Guinea -- a distance of over 11,000 km, or 6,600 miles!
